North Weald Bassett is a village that sits a couple of miles south of Epping along the road towards Ongar. The old airfield is the main landmark, now used for markets, car boot sales, and occasional events. The village itself has a pub, a church, a primary school, and a small parade of shops. Housing is mostly postwar, with some older cottages in the centre and newer estates on the edges. It is firmly a car-dependent village. People live here because they want a village life within reach of the Central line at Epping, though the drive or bus to the station adds to the commute.
