Hellingly is a separate village north of Hailsham with its own parish church and a proper rural feel. The big change was the redevelopment of the former Hellingly Hospital site into a large housing estate, which has brought a lot of new residents. The original village around the church is genuinely pretty, with period cottages and a quiet lane atmosphere. The newer estate is functional but unremarkable. The Cuckoo Trail runs through, connecting it to Hailsham and Heathfield for walking and cycling.
