Notting Hill is one of London's most famous neighbourhoods, and for good reason. Portobello Road Market, the carnival, the coloured houses, the film. The reality is that it's an extremely expensive area with a genuine community underneath the gloss. The streets off Westbourne Grove and Ladbroke Grove have excellent independent shops, restaurants, and cafes. Housing is predominantly Victorian terraces and stucco-fronted houses, many now worth millions. It's beautiful, well-connected, and increasingly the preserve of the very wealthy. The carnival is the one weekend a year when the area's Caribbean community takes centre stage.
