Shortstown is a purpose-built housing estate on the southeastern edge of Bedford, developed from the late 1990s on former Ministry of Defence land next to the old Short Brothers aircraft works. The massive Cardington Hangars dominate the skyline, which is either impressive or slightly eerie depending on your taste. Housing is almost entirely newish, mostly detached and semi-detached, very uniform in style. It is quiet and self-contained with a small local centre but you are driving into Bedford or out to the retail parks for proper shopping. The village of Cardington is next door. It appeals mainly to families who want something affordable and relatively new without the maintenance headaches of older stock. There is not much in the way of character or local identity beyond the estate itself.
