Old Amersham's high street is one of the best-preserved in the Chilterns. Pubs in old coaching inns, independent shops, a proper butcher, and restaurants that people drive to from surrounding villages. The houses along the high street and up the surrounding lanes are mostly period cottages and Georgian townhouses. Amersham-on-the-Hill is where the station is, and that's more conventional suburban with 1930s semis and some newer estates. The Metropolitan line gets you into Baker Street without changing, which is the main commuter draw. It's solidly affluent and very settled. People move here for the schools, the countryside access, and the feeling of living in a proper town rather than a suburb.
