Ascot is defined by the racecourse and the wealth around it. The housing is mostly large detached properties on quiet, heavily treed roads, many of them gated. There is no real high street to speak of, just a small parade of shops near the station that covers the basics. Most people drive to Sunninghill or Sunningdale for anything beyond a pint of milk. Ascot station runs South Western Railway into Waterloo, which takes about fifty minutes. The area feels more like a collection of expensive houses in woodland than a town, which is exactly the point for the people who live there. Crown Estate land and golf courses (Swinley Forest, the Berkshire) mean you are never far from open space. Families tend to use private schools or drive to the better state options in Bracknell.
