Buckingham is a handsome Georgian market town built around a bend in the River Great Ouse. The Old Gaol and the Chantry Chapel give the centre some character, and the high street still has a proper mix of butchers, cafes, and independent shops rather than just charity shops and estate agents. The University of Buckingham, the UK's oldest private university, sits on the edge of town and keeps a handful of restaurants and pubs busier than you would expect. There is no railway station, which is the major drawback. You drive to Milton Keynes for the train or for anything the town cannot provide. Housing is a mix of older stone and brick cottages in the centre and modern estates on the edges, particularly towards the Lace Hill development. Families like it for the community feel and the schools, but anyone commuting to London needs patience and a car.
