Springfield is one of Chelmsford's most established residential areas, to the north-east of the centre. It has its own distinct identity with a parish council and a proper high street along Springfield Road with a Co-op, takeaways, a post office, and a few independents. The old Springfield Prison site (now Barnes Mill) has been redeveloped into housing. Housing is mixed, from 1930s semis to modern estates. Springfield Park is well used by families. The primary schools here are popular. It's a reliable, slightly boring family suburb, and there's nothing wrong with that.
