Ifield predates the new town and has a proper village core around St Margaret's church, the old millpond, and the Plough pub. That original village centre still has real character even though the surrounding area was swallowed by new-town development in the 1950s. Ifield station has direct trains to London. The newer parts are standard new-town housing, but the village centre lifts the whole neighbourhood. It is one of the more distinctive parts of Crawley and families like it for the combination of village feel and practical transport links.
