Thornton Heath is urban, busy, and properly diverse. The high street along the A23 is full of West African, Caribbean, and South Asian shops and restaurants, and it feels like one of the most genuinely multicultural stretches in south London. Thornton Heath station gets you to London Bridge reasonably quickly. The housing is mostly Victorian and Edwardian terraces, many converted into flats. It's noisy on the main roads. The residential backstreets are quieter and some have decent-sized family houses at prices that would be impossible a few miles north. It's not polished but it's real.
