Eltham's high street has had a rough couple of decades but there are signs of life. The Eltham Centre (a small shopping mall) anchors one end. Eltham station has trains to Charing Cross and London Bridge. Eltham Palace, the Art Deco masterpiece owned by English Heritage, is the local landmark and genuinely worth visiting. The housing stock runs from Victorian terraces near the station to 1930s semis further out. Bob Hope was born here, which tells you something about how long Eltham has been a suburban town. It feels more like Kent than London, and not everyone means that as a compliment.
