Cross-in-Hand is effectively Heathfield's southern extension along the A267, with a garage, a few shops, and the Cross-in-Hand pub. It blurs into Heathfield at the top end. Framfield is a separate village a couple of miles further south towards Uckfield, set around a church and village green. Framfield has more of a distinct identity as a proper village, while Cross-in-Hand feels more like a roadside settlement. Both areas are car-dependent with no rail access. The housing around Cross-in-Hand is a mix of 1960s and 70s estates and some bungalows, while Framfield has more period cottages.
