Bray is famous for two things: the Fat Duck and the Waterside Inn. Two three-Michelin-star restaurants in one small village is absurd, and it gives the place a reputation that is a bit disconnected from daily life. In reality, Bray is a pretty Thames-side village with a medieval church, a proper village green, and housing that ranges from old cottages to seriously expensive riverside properties. The M4 motorway bridge is visible and audible from parts of the village, which is the honest trade-off. Monkey Island and Bray Lock are lovely. It feels genuinely rural despite being minutes from Maidenhead town centre.
