Barkingside has its own high street, its own identity, and a Central line station. The high street is a proper working strip with independent shops, cafes, a Sainsbury's, and the Fullwell Cross library and leisure centre nearby. Barnardo's was founded here and the old Dr Barnardo's cottages are still visible. Housing is mostly 1930s semis with some Victorian terraces nearer the station. It has a community feel that central Ilford lacks, and the families who live here are generally loyal to it. The Fairlop Waters park on the edge gives good green space.
