Merstham is the part people know here, a village that ended up sandwiched between the M25 and the M23. There is a proper old village core with a church and a pub, but the A23 runs right through and you can hear the motorway from most of it. The council estates on the east side date from the 1950s and 60s. Hooley is barely a place, more a junction. Netherne was a psychiatric hospital that got converted into housing in the 1990s and still feels oddly self-contained. Merstham station gets you into London but most people drive.
