Borstal carries the weight of its name. The Borstal prison system was named after this village, and the area has historically been more working class and council-dominant than the rest of Rochester. Newer housing around the edge has brought in some commuters who use Rochester station, softening the edges without fully transforming the character. Schools in the area are good enough to attract families who want Rochester's connectivity but cannot stretch to the east side. Rochester West is a broader sweep of residential streets with fewer of the period properties that make east Rochester appealing. If Borstal's name puts you off, newer developments in the western fringes are worth looking at. Same station access, less baggage.
