Rye Lane is the main commercial strip running through the centre of Peckham. African fabric shops, halal butchers, the Peckhamplex cinema with its famously cheap tickets, and an increasing number of bars and cafes aimed at a younger crowd. It was recently pedestrianised at the northern end, which has improved the atmosphere. The side streets have a mix of ex-council flats and some converted Victorian properties. Living right on Rye Lane is noisy and hectic. One street back is much calmer. It is the most energetic high street in south-east London.
