Mayfield has one of the best preserved high streets in the Weald. Timber-framed and weatherboarded buildings, a handful of independent shops, a proper butcher, and The Rose and Crown. The old convent school, now Mayfield School, dominates the southern end of the village. Five Ashes is a hamlet a mile or so south with not much beyond a pub and a scattering of houses. There is no railway station so you are driving to Wadhurst or further for trains. The village feels affluent and well kept, popular with families who want countryside and a strong primary school.
