The town itself is a mix of a small historic core along the high street and a lot of newer housing estates from the last 40 years. It has the essentials, a Co-op, a few takeaways, a couple of pubs, a leisure centre, and Freman College for sixth form. But it punches below its weight for daily life and most residents treat it as a base for driving elsewhere. The lack of a railway station is the big limitation. Families are drawn by the relatively affordable housing compared to Bishop's Stortford or Hertford, and the primary schools have a decent reputation locally.
