Cambourne is a purpose-built new town that has been expanding in phases since the early 2000s. Great Cambourne, Lower Cambourne, Upper Cambourne, and now West Cambourne keeps pushing it further out. The housing is almost entirely modern estate development, cul-de-sacs and shared-surface roads, reasonably spacious by new-build standards. There is a hub with a Morrisons, a Co-op, a few takeaways and a pub, but it does not feel like a proper town centre. Schools were built into the masterplan so primary provision is decent. The big draw is space and value compared to Cambridge itself, plus the guided busway gets you into Cambridge in about 40 minutes. It can feel a bit soulless if you are used to a place with some history, but families with young children like the parks, the safe streets, and the fact that everything is new and functional.
