The Barbican Estate is where the City actually has residents. The brutalist complex, completed in the 1970s, is Grade II listed and has a fiercely loyal community. Over 4,000 flats arranged around lakes, walkways, and the arts centre. The Barbican Centre is one of London's most important cultural venues: concert hall, theatres, cinemas, galleries, a tropical conservatory. The flats are not cheap but they're well built, with thick walls and a sense of living inside a concrete fortress. Barbican and Moorgate tubes are on the doorstep. There's a small Waitrose and a few restaurants within the complex. It's unlike anywhere else in London. You either love the aesthetic or find it oppressive, but the people who live here rarely want to leave.
