Benenden is best known for the girls' boarding school, which dominates the village physically and culturally. The village green is genuinely lovely, with a pub, a church, and a scattering of houses around it. There is a good village primary school and a community hospital that has been there since 1907, originally a TB sanatorium. Housing is mostly period cottages and larger detached houses on the lanes out of the village. It is quiet in a way that takes some getting used to. You are driving to Cranbrook for a proper shop.
