Hawkhurst sits at a crossroads where the A229 meets the A268, which gives it a slightly busier feel than the other villages around here. It has two distinct centres, the Moor and the Colonnade, separated by about half a mile. There is a small Tesco Express, some local shops, and a few pubs. The Hawkhurst Gang of smugglers operated out of here in the 18th century, which is about as exciting as local history gets. Housing is a mix of older Wealden properties and more modern infill. Families use it as a base because of the primary school and proximity to Cranbrook grammar. The A21 is relatively close for getting towards Tunbridge Wells or Hastings.
