Sandgate is a proper village that happens to be joined onto Folkestone's western edge. It has its own high street with a few pubs, an antiques shop or two, and a castle on the seafront. The Esplanade runs along the coast with views across to France on a clear day. Housing is mixed but includes some handsome period properties, particularly along the seafront and up the hill toward Shorncliffe. It has more of a settled, genteel feel than central Folkestone. West Folkestone behind Sandgate is more suburban and unremarkable, but the Sandgate end has real character. Folkestone West station is nearby.
