The area around Gillingham station is where the town makes most sense. Victorian and Edwardian terraces line the streets nearest the station, the high street runs alongside with a mix of chain shops, independents, and the inevitable empty units you find on most Kent high streets. Commuters are drawn here for the London service and the price gap between Gillingham and anything further south. There are tired streets that pull the feel down, and it doesn't feel especially safe after dark near the station area, but for practical day-to-day living it has decent bones. The further north you go the quieter it gets.
