The old town by the river has genuine character. St Andrew's Gardens, the Gordon Promenade along the waterfront, and the old High Street with its Georgian and Victorian buildings. The Gurdwara is one of the first in England and reflects the area's large Sikh community. The market runs several days a week. Shopping is basic, lots of phone shops and barbers, and the St George's centre is tired. But the riverside is lovely, the ferry to Tilbury still runs, and the station gets you to St Pancras in under 25 minutes on a good day. A lot of the period housing close to the centre is surprisingly affordable.
