Galleywood sits at the southern end, where Great Baddow starts to thin out into countryside. Galleywood Common is a proper common with heathland and woodland, which gives the area a distinctly different feel from the rest of Chelmsford's suburbs. Housing is a mix of 1960s and 70s estates plus some older properties around the common and the church. There is a small parade of shops on Watchouse Road but nothing you would call a high street. Families with primary-age children like it for the village school and the space to let kids roam on the common.
