SS3 0 / SS3 9
A sprawling village that still feels separate from the Southend urban area, even though it's only a couple of miles from Shoeburyness. The older part around the High Street has some character, with the church and a few local shops. Most of the housing is post-war semis and bungalows, plus some newer estates on the edges. There's no station so you're driving to Shoeburyness for the c2c line into Fenchurch Street. Families come here because it's affordable compared to Leigh-on-Sea or Rayleigh, and because it still feels like a village with fields around it. The flat marshes along the estuary are good for walking if you like that sort of thing, but the isolation can wear thin in winter.
