Thamesmead was built in the 1960s as a utopian new town on the Woolwich marshes. The brutalist concrete blocks, lakes, and elevated walkways are unmistakable, and yes, it's where A Clockwork Orange was filmed. Peabody has taken over much of the estate and there's been investment in new housing and community facilities. The transport has always been Thamesmead's weakness: no rail station, reliant on buses. The DLR extension has been talked about for years. The lakes and green spaces are genuinely extensive. It's one of London's most misunderstood places.
