Hackney Central is the civic heart of the borough. Mare Street runs through it, with the Town Hall, the Hackney Empire, the Picturehouse cinema, and a string of restaurants and cafes. The morning market outside the Town Hall is worth a visit. Housing is a genuine mix of council estates, Victorian terraces, and newer developments. Hackney Central and Hackney Downs Overground stations give decent connections west and north. It can feel hectic, with heavy traffic on Mare Street and a lot going on. It has proper amenities and a sense that this is a working borough centre rather than just another high street.
