Hemel Hempstead Town

The town centre has two distinct parts. The Marlowes is the main pedestrianised shopping street with the usual chains, plus the Riverside retail area. It's functional but not exciting. The Old Town, up the hill around the High Street and St Mary's Church, is the original settlement and has a completely different character. Proper old buildings, a few decent pubs, and the feel of a historic Hertfordshire market town. If you live in the Old Town area itself, the housing is attractive and you get a sense of place that the New Town neighbourhoods lack.
