Hertford Castle

This is the heart of Hertford, centred on the castle grounds and the old town around Fore Street and St Andrew Street. The castle itself is a council building now but the gardens are lovely and well used. The housing close in is a mix of period townhouses, some Georgian, and converted buildings, with newer flats along the river. Both stations are walkable from here. The pubs and restaurants are concentrated in this part of town, and Saturday mornings have a farmers' market feel. It is compact and pleasant, though parking can be a pain.
