Hertford Heath is a proper village on the ridge south of the town, with a green, a pub, and a primary school. Brickendon is even smaller and more rural, essentially a hamlet in the woods. The housing in Hertford Heath is a mix of older cottages around the green and postwar infill along the London Road. You need a car for most things beyond the basics. The surrounding woodland and common land is the real draw, it feels properly countryside rather than suburban fringe. People move here specifically because they want the village life but with Hertford's stations a short drive away.
