Istead Rise is a postwar housing development built on the ridge between Gravesend and Meopham. It feels like a purpose-built commuter settlement, mostly 1950s and 60s semis and detached houses arranged around cul-de-sacs. There is a small parade of shops and a primary school but not much else to keep you there during the day. Cobham is a proper old Kent village with a lovely church, a decent pub, and Owletts (a National Trust property) on the main street. Luddesdown is even smaller, just a handful of houses and a Saxon church in a valley. The contrast between the three is striking. Cobham and Luddesdown are genuinely rural and attractive, while Istead Rise is functional suburbia that happens to be surrounded by countryside. Meopham or Sole Street stations handle the commute, both on the Victoria line via Bromley South.
