Margate Central covers the Old Town, the seafront, the Turner Contemporary, and Dreamland. This is the Margate you see in the weekend supplements. The Old Town has genuinely interesting independent shops, galleries, and restaurants. The sandy beach is excellent and the harbour arm gets packed in summer. It also has the less photogenic bits: the high street behind the seafront is still struggling, with empty units and pound shops. Margate station is here, with the HS1 service to St Pancras. Housing is a mix of Georgian and Victorian terraces, many now renovated, and some new build flats. Noisy and busy in summer, quiet in winter.
