Beckton was built in the 1980s on land that used to be the gasworks and sewage treatment area. It is a planned estate of low-rise houses, mostly small terraces and semis, with that distinctly 1980s look. The DLR runs through and Beckton is the end of the line. There is an Asda superstore and a retail park that most people drive to. It feels suburban and slightly isolated from the rest of Newham, almost like it was dropped in from Essex. Families come here because you can get a house with a garden and a parking space, which is rare this close to the City.
