Oakley is a proper Hampshire village about three miles west of Basingstoke. It has a church, a pub (The Beach Arms), a village shop, and a primary school. The housing is a mix of older cottages along the main road and newer estates that have grown the village considerably since the 1980s. Most people commute into Basingstoke or drive to the M3. The Candovers (Preston Candover, Brown Candover, Chilton Candover) are strung along the B3046 to the south, much smaller and quieter, with proper chalk stream countryside. Daily life for anything beyond basics means a car trip into Basingstoke. It suits families and retirees who want village life within reach of a town.
