Old Basing is technically a village but it's really been absorbed into Basingstoke's eastern edge. The old part around the ruins of Basing House and St Mary's Church still has genuine character, with period cottages, a couple of pubs, and a proper village street. Beyond that core it's mostly 1970s onwards housing that blends into the Basingstoke sprawl. Upton Grey, further out, is a completely different proposition. Tiny, very pretty, thatched cottages around a green, the sort of place where everyone knows each other. The two don't have much in common beyond sharing a ward. You'll need a car for almost everything unless you're just popping to the Co-op in Old Basing.
