Chipping Ongar is the historic core, with a motte-and-bailey castle mound, a Norman church, and a compact High Street. Housing is a mix of older cottages and period properties in the centre with 1960s and 70s estates on the edges, plus some newer infill developments. The old railway station is now a heritage line run by volunteers. You need a car for most things, and the school run to Epping or Brentwood secondaries is a fact of life. It's the kind of small town where people know each other in the Co-op. Families settle here for the space and the village pace, accepting the trade-off on transport.
