Whitley is south Reading's big residential sprawl. The Whitley estate is one of the largest council-built areas in the town, and it still defines the character. Basingstoke Road runs through with a string of shops, takeaways, and services. Reading's big retail parks and the Madejski Stadium (now the Select Car Leasing Stadium) are down here too. It's affordable, well-connected by bus, and has a strong community identity even if it doesn't have the best reputation. Families who grew up here tend to stay.
