Rettendon is a scattered rural parish south of Chelmsford with no real village centre. Rettendon Common has a handful of houses along the road but nothing you would call a settlement. The main point of interest nearby is Battlesbridge with its antiques centre and tearooms, which draws weekend visitors. Housing is mostly detached properties and converted farmhouses spread along country lanes. You need a car for everything. Battlesbridge station gives you a train into Liverpool Street but the service is slow and infrequent. It is quiet, genuinely rural Essex, and people live here because they want land and privacy rather than convenience.
