Sheerness is the main town on Sheppey and it wears its history on its sleeve. The dockyard closed over sixty years ago and the town never fully recovered. The high street has more empty units than occupied ones in places, and the seafront has a faded seaside feel with amusement arcades and fish and chip shops. That said, there is a community here that gets on with it. The Bluetown area near the old dockyard has some interesting heritage buildings. Housing is cheap, mostly Victorian terraces and ex-council. Sheerness-on-Sea is the end of the branch line. It is honest, no-frills, and not trying to sell you anything.
