Sonning is one of those Thames-side villages that looks like it belongs on a biscuit tin. Thatched cottages, a medieval bridge, a George Clooney-grade postcode. The Bull Inn is a proper old pub. It's tiny though, and there's almost nothing in the way of shops or services. Charvil next door is the modern counterpart, a 1970s and 80s housing estate that grew up around the A4 between Twyford and Reading. It's functional rather than pretty, but it's close to Twyford station and the schools. The two places could hardly be more different despite being next to each other.
