Whitchurch proper has a compact high street with a butcher, a Co-op, a few cafes, and the Silk Mill down by the river. Housing is a mix of period cottages in the centre and 1970s onwards estates filling in around the edges. The surrounding villages like Litchfield, St Mary Bourne, and Hurstbourne Priors are proper rural Hampshire, with thatched cottages and not much else. The primary school in town is well regarded locally. The Test Way runs through here, so if you like walking or fishing this is good territory. It is quiet, genuinely quiet. The trade-off is that you need a car for almost everything, and the train service to London is slow and patchy compared to what you get from Basingstoke.
