The Becontree estate is one of the largest council estates ever built, put up in the 1920s and 30s to house families from the East End slums. Streets and streets of pebble-dashed semis with front and back gardens, which is actually a lot of space by London standards. Becontree station on the District line is the main link. There is a Tesco and local parades but no proper high street. Many homes are now privately owned and it has become popular with families who cannot afford Redbridge or Havering but want a house with a garden. The estate has a repetitive look but the houses are solidly built.
