Cranbrook is the main settlement in this part of the Weald and functions as the service centre for the surrounding villages. The high street has a proper mix of independent shops, a Tesco, cafes, and pubs. The Union Windmill, the finest smock mill in England, sits on a hill above the town. There is a good range of housing from white weatherboarded cottages in the centre to newer estates on the edges. Cranbrook School is a well-regarded grammar, which is a big pull for families. The town has enough going on that you do not feel completely cut off, but you still need a car for commuting. Staplehurst station is the usual choice for London, about 15 minutes drive.
