Hartley is a large, sprawling village that grew substantially in the postwar decades. It has a reasonable range of local facilities, a couple of shops, pubs, a primary school, and a recreation ground. The housing is mostly 1950s to 1970s semis and detached houses on curving residential roads. It is not pretty in a traditional Kent village sense, but it is practical and relatively affordable for the Sevenoaks district. Hodsoll Street is genuinely rural, just a scattering of houses around a crossroads. Longfield station is the nearest rail link for Hartley, about a mile and a half away.
