The harbour area has been transformed. The Harbour Arm is now a long boardwalk with food stalls, bars, a screen on the wall cinema, and live music in summer. It is the main draw for visitors and gives Folkestone a genuine seafront destination. The surrounding streets are a mix of old fishermen's cottages and Victorian terraces, some done up nicely, others still rough. There is a big new-build development on the old harbour station site bringing modern flats. The beach is shingle and the old town climbs steeply behind. This is where the investment is most concentrated but also where the contrast with unrenovated streets is sharpest.
