The Tillingbourne valley runs through the Surrey Hills between Guildford and Dorking, taking in Chilworth, Blackheath, and Shamley Green. Chilworth has the old gunpowder mills and is the most accessible, with a station on the Reading to Gatwick line. Shamley Green has a proper village green and a cricket club and feels like deep countryside. Blackheath is tiny and very quiet. The whole area is heavily wooded and hilly, with St Martha's Hill and its church a well-known walking destination. Housing is scattered and ranges from modest cottages to substantial country houses. You need a car for everything, but people who live here do so precisely because it feels remote while being fifteen minutes from Guildford.
