Stoke Newington is Hackney's village. Church Street is one of the best independent high streets in London, with bookshops, cafes, restaurants, and a proper community feel. Clissold Park is at one end, Abney Park Cemetery at the other. The residential streets have beautiful Victorian terraces that are now seriously expensive. It's been popular with left-leaning professionals and creative types for decades, and it shows in the character of the shops and the people. No tube station, which is its main transport drawback. The 73 bus into town is a way of life. It has the feel of a small town that happens to be in inner London, which is exactly why people pay a premium to live here.
